  • Wear metals. Iron tracks cylinder liners, gears and shafts; aluminium points to pistons; chromium to rings; lead, tin and copper to bearing overlays. Elevated bearing metals in a “recently serviced” engine is the classic pre-failure signature — and invisible at sea trial.
  • Coolant intrusion. Sodium and potassium in the oil betray a leaking head gasket, cracked head or failing cooler long before the tell-tale mayonnaise appears on the dipstick. In marine engines this is the finding that most often changes a deal.
  • Fuel dilution. Unburned fuel thinning the oil signals injector problems, chronic idling or short-run operation — the exact profile of a neglected marina queen whose hour meter looks innocent.

The commonest way buyers ruin this test is sampling wrong or letting the seller control it. The protocol: sample hot, immediately after a genuine run under load — the sea trial is perfect timing; draw mid-sump via a clean vacuum pump tube inserted to consistent depth, or mid-stream during a drain, never the first or last of the flow and never from the filter; use laboratory-supplied clean bottles, labelled with engine hours and time since last oil change; and sample every engine and gearbox separately — on a twin-engine catamaran that is four samples, and gearbox oil frequently tells a worse story than the engines.
