Independent Yacht Surveyors in Indonesia: Landscape, Credentials & Fee Bands

Bali Yacht Broker Editorial Desk 7 min read

Indonesia has a small but competent pool of independent yacht surveyors, concentrated in Bali, Batam and Jakarta, most accredited through IIMS, SAMS or class societies. Expect USD 18–30 per foot for a full pre-purchase survey, and always confirm the surveyor is paid by you — not by the seller or the yard.

Every serious yacht purchase in Indonesia stands or falls on one document: the survey report. Yet buyers routinely spend months choosing a boat and fifteen minutes choosing the person who will judge it. This guide maps who actually surveys yachts in Indonesian waters, which credentials mean something, what independence really looks like in a small market, and the fee bands you should expect to pay in 2026.

The Surveyor Landscape: Who Works Indonesian Waters

The professional pool splits into four groups, and each has a different centre of gravity.

Resident independents

A handful of full-time marine surveyors live and work in Indonesia, mostly around Bali and Batam. They know tropical degradation patterns — osmosis behaviour in warm water, UV-cooked deck fittings, electrolysis in crowded anchorages — better than any visitor. Availability is the constraint: the best book out two to four weeks ahead in the buying season.

Fly-in specialists

For catamarans, superyachts and steel or aluminium hulls, buyers often fly a specialist in from Singapore, Phuket or Australia. Add USD 1,500–3,000 in travel and day rates, justified when the vessel type demands niche expertise — composite big-cats, for instance, reward a surveyor who has seen a hundred of them.

Class society surveyors

BKI (Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia) and international societies such as Lloyd’s or BV maintain surveyors for commercial classification work. They are rigorous on structure and statutory items but their brief is class compliance, not buyer advocacy — a distinction we unpack in our comparison of condition and class survey reports.

Yard and insurer-linked surveyors

Some Indonesian yards and insurance agencies keep in-house surveyors. Useful for damage claims and refit sign-offs, but for a purchase they carry a structural conflict: their employer’s revenue may depend on the transaction closing or on future yard work.

Credentials That Actually Mean Something

Indonesia does not licence yacht surveyors as a profession, so accreditation is your proxy for competence. In practice these are the marks worth checking:

  • IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveying) — membership grades from affiliate to fellow; verify the grade, not just the logo.
  • SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) — the AMS designation requires examined competence and continuing education.
  • MECAL / NAMS — smaller but credible bodies, common among Australian and European surveyors working Southeast Asia.
  • Class society authorisation — relevant for commercial vessels and steel hulls, where BKI plate-thickness protocols matter.

Ask three verification questions before booking: Can I see a sample report for a similar vessel? Who is your professional indemnity insurer? When did you last survey this yacht — because a surveyor who inspected the same boat for a previous buyer must disclose it.

What Independence Looks Like in a Small Market

Bali’s marine community is compact; everyone knows everyone. Independence is therefore a matter of structure, not geography. The test is simple: the surveyor is engaged by the buyer, paid by the buyer, and reports only to the buyer. When a listing broker recommends a surveyor, treat the name as a starting point and interview at least one alternative. Our own desk maintains a panel of surveyors precisely so buyers can choose — the pre-purchase survey desk for Indonesian waters explains how we keep the engagement contractually on the buyer’s side of the table.

Fee Bands for 2026

Indicative professional fees in USD, excluding haul-out, travel and lab work:

  • Full pre-purchase condition survey (monohull): USD 18–25 per foot. A 45-footer lands around USD 900–1,100.
  • Full pre-purchase survey (catamaran): USD 22–30 per foot — two hulls, more surface, composite-specific checks. The specifics are covered in our note on see the catamaran surveyor bali page.
  • Rig survey (aloft inspection): USD 400–800 as an add-on.
  • Engine survey with oil sampling: USD 500–1,200 per engine; lab analysis of the sample runs another USD 40–80 and is, in our view, non-negotiable — see what oil analysis reveals before you buy.
  • Phinisi / traditional timber vessel: quoted per project, typically USD 2,500–6,000 including moisture mapping and fastening checks.
  • Superyacht (30 m+): day-rate engagements, USD 1,200–2,000 per day plus expenses, usually two to five days.

Fees scale with what is at stake. On the listings that move through our brokered yacht listings across Bali and Indonesia, survey spend averages well under one percent of purchase price — and renegotiations that follow survey findings recover several multiples of that on the vessels where problems surface.

Booking Logistics

Sequence matters. Agree terms first, then book the surveyor, then lock the haul-out slot around the surveyor’s date — Benoa and Serangan hardstands fill one to three weeks out in season. Send the surveyor the listing specification, prior reports and the seller’s maintenance log before the visit; a briefed surveyor finds more in a day than a cold one finds in two. For sailing catamarans, coordinate the rig check and hull inspection into a single haul-out window. Buyers shopping the catamaran sale and purchase should budget a full extra day compared with an equivalent monohull.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a licensing body for yacht surveyors in Indonesia?

No. Indonesia licenses class surveyors for commercial shipping through BKI, but recreational yacht surveying is unregulated. Buyer protection comes from choosing surveyors with verifiable IIMS, SAMS or class-society credentials and professional indemnity insurance.

Can I use the seller’s recent survey report instead of commissioning my own?

Treat it as background only. A report commissioned by the seller carries no duty of care to you, may be outdated, and its scope may have been negotiated. Insurers and finance providers will generally require a survey commissioned in your name.

How far in advance should I book a surveyor in Bali?

Two to four weeks in the June–September buying season; one to two weeks otherwise. Fly-in specialists need three to five weeks to align travel with a haul-out slot.

Does the broker attend the survey?

A broker should facilitate — arrange access, haul-out and crew — and then step back. The surveyor’s findings go to the buyer first. Any broker who wants to filter the report before you see it is describing a conflict of interest, not a service.
